Some of tho Akitio back-blocks are CO miles from a doctor's residence, and as accidents are not uncommon in such rough country, settlors have been trying to get a doctor to take up residence in Pongaroa. Advices from Lawrence state that during the whole of yesterday and well into the night a stiffish gale from southwest was blowing. Tho cold was intense, and tho effect on the young lambs must have been disastrous. The Inst cycle was dispatched ono minute after 10, and the first (Bell) arrived at Oamaru at 1.23 p.m.. ' FIRE AT GISBORNE. Gisbornc, October 21. An unoccupied seven-roomed houso oivned by J. 'Fairlie was destroyed by fire this morning. The insurance was £350 in tho National Office. The owner intended moving in to-day. THE LIQUOR LAW. Ashburton, October 20. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Alexander M'Kenzio and Mary M'Konzio (his wife) were charged with keeping liquor for sale, and with selling tho same. Mary Mlvenzio was convicted and fined £iti, with costs, on the first charge, and. Alexander M'Kenzio was convicted and fined .£25 on the second charge. AUCKLAND CARTERS. Auckland, October 20. The Conciliation Board has been occupied for six days in an endeavour k> arrange an agreement in the CaTters' dispute. The difficulties proved insurmountable, however, and tho dispute passes to the Arbitration Court. FLOATING MAST SIGHTED. Auckland, October 20. The master of the steamer Navua, which arrived from Westijort, reports that- in lat. '10.8 sonth. and long. 171.53 east of Cape Farewell, bearing south 11 E.,'magnetic, and distant 43 miles, a vessel's wooden mast, floating upright, and about five feet high, was sighted. It was covered with marine growth. , No signs of a hull attached could bo seen. Tho weather was too bad to investigate. The officers of tho Navna believe tho mast may belong to the missing barque Mary Isabel. BANDS IN RIVALRY, Christchurch, October 20. Quickstep Competition.—All the abovementioned bands. SHEARERS' DISPUTE. Christchurch, October 20. The Conciliation Council met this morning to hear a dispute filed between the Now Zealand, Shearers' and Wcolshed Employees'- Union and tho Canterbury Sheepowuers' Association. Tho Commissioner (Mr. J. K. Triggs) presided. There was little discussion, both parties agreein' to accept the award given by the Arbitration Ooiirt in the dispute between tho Wellington shearers and owners. It was stated that the claims of the shearers ivere agreed, to because the Wellington federations of sheepowaers and shearers had agreed to accept the award as a Dominion one. Neither party was satisfied with tho award, but both were agreeing to it in order to carry out the obligation they were under to accept the Wellington award. FEILDING ATHLETICS. Fcilding, October 20. The annual meeting of the Feildinj: Centre of tho N. 7,. .Athletic Union was hold yesterday. The report stated that twenty-four clubs tad been affiliated to tho centre. Th« new boundaries formed left, this centre extending from Palmerston North to Tauinarnnui. Active and effective measures hni! been taken to minimise fraudulent and corrupt practices. Last year's officers wero re-elected. ANXIETY ABOUT VESSEL. Auckland, October lfl. Forty-one days' sailing across the T.ismsin Sea has not brought tho barouentino Mary Isabel on a voyage from Wnnngnne to Sydney, to her destination. AVreckntro floating in the track of 'vessels neaj tho Australian coast has lent weight to the anxiety which is felt for her safety. She" sailed from Wlmngapo on September 8 with a full cargo of sawn timber consigned to Messrs. B. S. Lamb and Co., Sydney. DRIVERS' DISPUTE. Blenheim, October 20. The Drivers' TJnion has cited tho mastors before the Conciliation Commission for November 15. They demand a minimum of JI2 ftv.-o horses) nnd ,£2 10?. (one horse), with 4s. a week for each additional horse, nnd 475 hours a week. The masters object that (.ho rate is too high. PRIVATE RAILWAYS. Dunedin, October 20. The Otago Trades and Labour Council last evening passed a resolution emphatically protesting against any privatelycontrolled railway being constructed in this Dominion.
