TRAIN TAKES FIRE.
FIVE HUNDRED GUINEA BULL' SCOHCEED. (By TolceraDli.—SDccial CorresDondontA Cartcrton, October 21. A Bomewhat peculiar accident occurred last night on Mis railway train convoyins slock from Hawko's Bay to Cartertou. During tho journey Iho engine-driver noticed smoke rising from one of the trucks, and stopped the train and hurried to tho scene. He found that tho straw in. tho truck was all ablaze, having, it is thought, been set alight by a spark from tlio engine. Fortunately, water was near by, and tho fire was quickly got under. The truck contained a Shorthorn bull, tho first prize winner at the recent Hawko's Bay show, and some heifers, Mongiug to Mr. li. D. D. M'Lenn, oi Hawke's Bay. The bull, which was valued at 500 guineas, was badly scorched on both sides, but (ho heifers were only slightly singed. Tho truck had commenced to burn when tho firo was discovered, and !:hero might have Iwett n serious disaster if it had not been noticed till a little later. It is not known whether tho bull will be fit for Wednesday's show.
