THE ELECTORAL ROLLS.
Sir,—There aro times when the irresponsibility of tho Ward Government is proved to every elector in the Dominion. Moro often their shortcomings aa-e cloakcd from the public, and when, in the interests of tho country, members of tho i Opposition endeavour to expose tho rockloss wasto of public money, they are subject to all manner of ridicule by Sir Joseph Ward, Bart, and Co. Tlte pitiful failure of tho electoral census, and the loss of many thousands of pounds sterling of the workers' mow*}', is but another instance of tho glaring incompetence of our present Government, obvious to all. It cannot bo too strongly urged upon all licform and Labour candidates the need of ascertaining that their supporters' names are definitely on the rolls. It isi futile to trust this important matter any longer to Government servants. The new rolls which are being hurriedly prepared, in many instances by woll-lcnov.-n canvassers of Ministerial candidates, aro only 'harassing electors; for neither tho Registrars nor thoir assistants aro able to explain why, after following all the instructions, electors aro still off tho roll. Given a thorough up-to-to-daio roll and the present autocratic rule will oeo«. Today our boas tod universal suffrage is a farce, ard a very exponisivo ono at tho.t. —I am, etc., "AN OLD TIME LIBERAL." Auckland.. Octeber 15.
