SOME WOMEN'S VERSES.
A HOUSE FOR LOVE. I. Oneo for Love's sake I built a place of flowers— Of flashing ,at tho sun'a first kiss— Of liiics, gracious in their loveliness— And with croon branches screened it from tho showers. I planted musk, and thyme, and all herbs sweet About tho door, knowing that when the day Had warmed them, they would make a perfumed way Crushed into fragrance by Loves rosy feet. 6urelv, I thought, it is but sweet and fair That Lovo should have apart a dwell-ing-pi ace. , J said, "1 will go in a little space, That on Lovo's coming lis may find mo there." But though for days I watched the dusty road, And kept tho flowers living, just to show That I was ready for him, this I kno.w— v love has not entered in' to that abode. 11. Again I built a house. Upon the walls 1 painted strango,, devices born of dreams, And reared great pillars carved with leaves, whero played, As in a wood, the languorous sunbeams. I burnt sweet perfumes from tho East, and made With lamps all dimly lit, a mystery, And/round my shoulders drew a purple cloak Wrought in dull greens of jade and : rosemary. > Then in the midst I set a golden throne And flung upon it silks of Tyrian dye, ''Surely,' X said, "if Lovo should chance to seo This loveliness—ho will not pass it by." I opened wido the doors, then .on my throno Tor I/n-e's approach I sat me down to wait. put lo.' when day had died, and the lamps wero "dim, Love crept in by a little postern-gate! Ruth Anderson. "BEHOLD, THIS DREAMER COMETH." All yo, who would ,havo wheat in yeark of blight, Cry out lor visions in the night,_ For power to dream, and dream aright. When, fair as dawn upon Parnassus' snows, Foam-born Aphrodite rose, What was she but a dream that froze? The dreams of Rome as thunderbolts wero hurled, As eagle's pinions were unfurled, Until their quarry was tho world.' Tho Hebrews dreamed, and bright with gold and gem, For-Sim's brow a diadem, Stood Heaven's type—Jerusalem. ' The Christians dreamed, and lo! their Christ, their Head, Whom waking wisdom held as dead, Comes daily to their altar bread. And not with sneers but with the trump and drum Shall men announce that dreamers . come, When they shall see of dreams the .sum. * Then ye, who would have wheat in years of Might, _ ; ■ Cry out for visions in the night, For power to dream, and dream aright. ■ Anna- Bunston.
