MAMMITIS.

1' SCOURGE OP TUB DAIRY FARM. •A short timo ago a deputation from tho King, Country waited upon the Government with a request that tho authorities should go into tho matter of a trial that was offered to the Agricultural Department by Mr. Krncrt Skinner, of Taranaki, regarding the uso of his preparation called "Mammitem," on cows suffering m from mammitis. The desired test was K not arranged. Dairymen the world over K have to face mammitis in all its forms I and'veterinarians have not, so far, discovered a remedy which will euro the affcct'ed quarter and yet leave the milk glands in a healthy milking state. . As i matters stand, mammitis is one of the greatest scourges tho dairyman has l'o contend with, and it will appeal in a clean herd practically without giving any indication of how it arose. Cases have oomo under notice in which heifers havo developed tho disease on ('he first calf thus showing that tho germs have not ™- been carried by tho milker. Trained veterinarians and. farmers who havo 2 fought the disease Tecogniso t'ho seriousness of contamination and use every effort to prevent tho spread of the disease. As the disease is onu which takes many - forms and gives a great number of symptoms it is hard to defino. from iiiflamma- . tion of tho udder until tho more acute forms develop, and then tho farmer will require all tho knowledge that tho veter- _/ - inarian can give him, but- if ho is advised in time he;will study this comi plaint and bo in a position to fight it as ho will need lo sooner or later, as , 7 tho spread is daily increasing and is •a. moro than seriously affecting the prcs!l- perity of the dairy industry of New Zealand. In certain herds under observation of the Veterinary Division 40 to !80 par cent of the cows have become useless and many havo died as a result of the disease. . It will bo seen from tho above the im'o portance which a remedy is to the farr, mer and State. 3lr.' Skinner is a pracig tical farmer of fifteen years' experience in Taranaki. lio has had considerablo trouble with mammitis in his herd, and after n great deal of costly csperimenl- , ing and research'ho has been able, with the assistance of a practical chemist, to , formulate a preparation of remarkable an)f tiseptic properties—properties that aro said to be death to germ life, yet healing and harmless to tho mombrane of the udder. It is stated that; results have proved this b- treatment to be far in advance of anything yet,put beforo tho dairy farmer, and Mr. Skinner ■is now introducing it ) to dairy farmers, r, ■
