DEATH OF MAJOR G. W. HUTTON.

(, AN INTERESTING CAREER. (By Tclezra.pli.—Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, October 20. C'ablo advico has been received of tho death, as tho rosiilt of an accident, of Major G. W. Hutton, D.5.0., eldest son of tho late Captain ]?. Vf. Hutton, tho well-known New Zealand scientist. Major Oilbert Moutgomcrie Hutton was born in Dublin on Juno 13, 18G5. Ho was educated at tho High School, Dunedin, and Christ's College, Christchurch. He graduated B.A. of New Zealand University in 1885, and was nominated for a commission in the Roval Engineers and gazetted lieutenant in February, 1886, lie served in tho Chin-Lushai expedition, ISS9-90, and throughout General liuller's Natal camIjaign, being- present at the Tugela, Spionkop, and at all the actions previous to tho relief of Ladysmith. Alter tho relief, he was appointed Staff Officer R.K .Natal Army, attached to General Sir It. Bullor's Headquarters Staff,. with Colonel C. K. Wood. When General Buller returned to England, deceased volunteered for further active service, and commanded the Ninth C.R.E. at Rus-' tenburg, where they were virtually besieged lor four montns. Then ho was employed in building blockhouses and fortifying the Northern railway till Januarv, 1902, when he was invalided home, 110 was twice mentioned in Sir R. liuller's dispatches with high commendation, and gazetted D.S.O. in April, 1901. Deceased also served in Bermuda and Jamaica, where ho was during the great earthquake of 1907, and was invalided for some tinio with injuries to his ankles. He held, besides tho D.S.O. Cross, tho Chin-Lushai .Medal and the South African Medal, with six clasps, also the King's Medal, with two clasps. He married in 1908 tho (laughter of the lafo Mr. Alfred Brown Gilbert, of Hove, and leaves two infant sons. His Inst appointment was at Hilsea, Portsmouth, and he would have been gazetted lieutenant-colonel at the end of this year.
