The City Council havo granted tho use of the Town Hall for a concert in aid of the Town Hall clock fund. Tho Mayor said at last night's meeting of tho council that in accord with suggestions mado to him by Counillor L. M'Kenzie, ho had solicited tho assistance of the Orphans' Club and the Savage Club. Both were going to assist, and it was for an cutertainment by one of these clubs that tho use of the' hall was being granted.

The Tramways Committee reported to the Citv Council last night that they had instructed the electrical engineer to put the freight car into commission at tho earliest possiblo moment. At the meeting of tho Wellington City Council last evening, the following recommendation from the Finance Committee was brought down-.—"That Professor flight be informed that this council will agree to cu-oporatc in the movement to establish a Wakefield memorial, but considers it advisable that the matter should bo held over till tho early part of next year. They also recommend that Professor 'flight be invited to come to Wellington in furtherance of tho project." Tho recommendation was adopted. The number of applicants for sections of Crown lands balloted for last year was 5170. The number of applicants for sections for land for settlement lands was 1011. The number of sections actually allotted bv ballot was:—For Crown lands, G37; for'land for settlements, 103. Tho number of Crown tenants who paid lend tax for the year ended March 31 last v.-.v? 1001.
