CITY COUNCIL.
THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last night. The Mayor (Air. T. At. Wilford) presided. There were also present Councillors Smith, Cohen, Frost. Atkinson, Gndber, M'Kcnzie, Barber, Fitzgerald, Fuller, Cameron, Hiudmarsh, Shirteliffe, and Fletcher. The Finance -Committee made tho following recommendations :— That the Onslow Borough Council he informed in reply to their application for a three-inch connection at Raugiora A%-enuo adjoining the Hutt Road, that if they pay for the cost or extending tlio main already existing in the Kaiwarra district, the work will be carried out. That a U-iu. water pipe bo extended from Para "Crescent to Hungerford Road and tho Lyall Bay quarry, at an estimated cost of J365That the Presbyterian Orphanage authorities be informed that if they provide the cost ot extending the sewer to the Orphanage at Alornington (approximately .£120), the extortion will be carried out, and they will be refunded tho amount when the sewerage is extended to that portion of Alornirgton which will require to use the sewer above referred to. That an account amounting to Xl2O from the council's contractors for advertising on the tramenrs, in connection with their contract, should bo authorised to be paid. The City Reserves Committee reported that they'had been waited upon by Air. P. J. Byddor, whose house was encroaching on 'the Town Belt at Duppa Street, \vho protested against tho cental of £'i 12s. per annum to bo chargcld whilst tho encroachment existed. The cioinmittco recommend that provided Air. Byddcr surrendered possession of all tha land except a strip round his house and set back tho fence, tho rental should be reduced to 30s. per annum. The recommendation was adopted. O'n the recommendation of tho By-laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee the council decided that a lamp bo erected at Old Bullock Road, Alitcholltown, at an estimated cost of ,£9, provided the fonr residents agree to tako tho private lighting in their homes; that the application of a resident of AVoodward Street, Wadeslown, for tho erection of a lamp in this street bo not entertained, as tho expenditure of ,£7 10s. is unwarranted at present; that the application of Thomas Turnbull and Son for permission to extend a wooden building at Alulgrave Street to the boundary of the section bo not acceded to; and that the proposed alteration in the alignment of the Main Road, Wadcstown, as suggested by Mr. Edgar Wylie, bo not entertained. In referenco to a notico of motion by Councillor Barber that an effort bo mado to secure from tho Harbour Board a few; dredge loads of white sand for deposit in Oriental Bay, with tho object of forming a sandy beach snitablo for tho recreation and amusement of children, tho City Engineer wrote; "I am of opinka that this proposal would bo costly. Tho proposed sea work, together with more regular attention to tho cleansing of tho beach, will mako tho place of moro presentable appearance, and there will still remain a considerable area where children may enjoy themselves in the shallow water. After completion of the protective work I nelievo tho beach will be extended naturally."—Tho report was received. The superintendent of city reserves was granted authority to plant the quarry at Oriental Bay with climbing plants, at an estimated cost of ;ClO. Councillor Hiudmarsh moved: That a penalty of sixty pounds be imposed against Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., for nonperformance of its contract within tho stipulated timo for tho supply of meters. The motion was seconded pro forma by Councillor Fuller, but, after discussion was lost.
