Bd., and, with your union's approval, our committee wish to hand this over to the Uukaroro Maori Girls' School, now under construction, the old school having been destroyed by liro last year. I might say that the behaviour ol the players while on tour was the best, and, but for accidents, we would have had a better record in our matches." On the 1910 tour (in New Zealand and Australia), tho expenditure amounted to .EMS 15s. Sd„ and the receipfs to .£"•«) 13s. lid., leaving a debit of JC2IS Is. 9d. Tho following letter was also received from Mr. W. T. Pnrata, of Rotorua:— "I hereby again ask your union to consider our application of last year for a Maori team to be nllowed to travel to England next year. The team will travel purely as amateurs, only travelling and hotel expenses (besides uniforms) to be paid. There will not bo any pocket-money allowed whatever. Any profits, over and above i:he ordinary expenses, our committoo will devote to found scholarships for Maori boys to attend universities. Tho tour will be financed by leading Maoris, wlio have already offered, and our committee can safely say that, with the class of players which comprised last and this year's' teams, there need be no fear of them,' if tho lour eventuated, leaving the amateur ranks. Every player's conduct will receive as much attention as would his ability on the field, if the time should arrive to do so. On behalf of my committee, I ask you to favourably consider this application, and communicate with tho English Union." Tho English Attitude. The secretary pointed out that tho request had been made lost year by tic Natives for a visit to England, and ho had written the English Union. lno replv on thai occasion was as follows:— "You- lettor re the Maori te-am has been placed before my committee, and wo are "lad to learn of their loyally to the amateur code, and the success of their recent lour iu Australasia. My committee, however do not feel able to arrange for them to tour thin country.—Yours faithfully, C. D. Marriott." , ...... The chairman pointed ont that, if tho request were forwarded and accepted, it would militate against any possibility of a New Zealand team for come time to come. .... l Mr. Isaacs thought that tho request should be forwarded, and it was finally decided to' do so, a sub-committee being set up to draft the letter to tho English Union. . . „ Outspoken Letter. A letter was received from Mr. G. 11. PowTiall, secretary of the Wanganui Union, enclosing a letter from Mr. fa. Holland, of Wunganui, who had been classified as a professional after referecing in a League match. Mr. Hollands letter is interesting:— , "Dear sir—Yours of September 20 to hand re profcsMonalis.n. Firstly, I should like vour definhion oi an amateur. I would wint out that, under the rules ' of tho N.Z. Referees' A-ssocialion, a ro- ! ferco was entitled to travelling expenses ' and 15s. a dav. This rule of 15s. per i dav was wiped ont at the last Referees' , Conference in Wellington, but has been I in force, sonic time. Now, as 1 have never 1 received any remuneration from the League garnet or any other game, for my services, I contend Hint I am more of an amateur than those referees of the N Z.R.U. who have received it. However, I have decided for myself that the Northern Learrue gamo is a better came to plav, to witness, and also to refereo in. It is immaterial to roe what your union classifies me as. SHU, I think that, in the eyes of anv unbiased person. I am amateur until I receive remuneration for mv services at anv gamo. Honing yon won't forget tn wnd mo that definition of ail amateur, I am, etc." Tho letter was received. The Carisbrook Ground. Tho Otano Ruabv Union wrote notifyin" the New Zoalmd body that it hail obtained the renewal of the lease of tho C'orisbrook ground, Dunedin, for a further term of twenty-one years.
