THE TRAMWAYS TRAFFIC MANAGER. , Tho Tramways Committee made a recommendation to tho City Council last nipht that the following conditions and schedule of duties in connection with (ho appointment of a traffic manager for tho Wellington city tramways should bo approved, viz. r"The successful candidate will bo required to devoto tho whole of his timo to tho servioo of tho Wellington City Council. Tli6 duties will compriso llio superintendence and control of tho whole of tho traffic of tho Wellington city tramway system. Ho will also havo full control of the inspectors, dispatchers, niotormen, conductors, and pointsmen, and of nil cars in traffic from tho timo tho motormrn tako charge of cars in a car shed until the ears arc returned to tho shod. He will also be required to draw up time-tables and rosters.' A note appended stated that there aro 33 miles of single track and 83 cars at present. The car mileage last year was 2.250,291 miles. Tho staff consists of about 250 men. Tho recommendation was adopted. Councillor Smith moved: "That the portion of the resolution passed by tho council on October 2, fixing the salary of tho tramways traffic manager at .£7OO per annum should bo rescinded, with a view of the amount being fixed at jMSO per annum." Councillor Smith thought a suitable man could bo got for .£450 to start with. He thought it unwise to have a man under tho engineer receiving nearly as much as tho engineer. The Mayor: "I am prepared to meet you, and fix it at XGOO, if you make- it on a fivo-year engagement, so as to inako it worth a man's while taking it up." Voices: "No. Leave it as it is.' Tia motion was not seconded.

Fortunately the hail storm which visited I'almorston yesterday afternoon did not cover a very wide area, being conflnod mostly lo the tovm itself. ' Manawntu Court of Fercrfers oelebrabed its SOth anniversary with a "soninl" in the court's hall last night. Thpre were between 70 and SO couples present, and an enjoyable timo was front.
