Mr. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, who is now in Auckland, will return to Wellington on Tuesday. Tito Wellington staff of tho Australasian T. and ti. Life Society wore entertained on Friday evening by the New Zealand manager (Mr. C. A. Marquis} at a social evening. Mr. W. J. Williamson received the trooliy presented by the society to tho leading agent of tho Wellington branch, and a very pleasant evening was greatly enhanced with musical and vocal contributions by the following: Mrs. Marquis, Messrs. Archer, Drury. Marquis, 11.l 1 . Rabbits, W. Bobbins, and W.,J. Williamson Mr, 1?. G. P. Zohrab returned from' a visit to the Chatham Islands on Saturdaj morning. Mr. D. Norman Leo was the recipient of a presentation from the staff of Messrs. Archibald Clark and Sous, Ltd,, on leaving that firm to join the staff ot Messrs. J. Smith, Ltd. Mr. James Stewart Shanks, an old resident of Mataura, died on Friday, aged 76. lie was a native of Glasgow and arrived at Port Chalmers in the ship Kelso, in November, 1849. In 1808, with his father and brother ho took up the Tufaratt run, which he retained, says a Press Association message from Gore, until sublivulc'l for closer settlement in 18T8. ]Io then removed to Mataura, where he conducted an auctioneering business, 110 was a member of tho County Council for several yc-ars, and also served as a member of (lie Education Bnrd. Tic represented Mataura in Parliament during 1879-81. the deceased is survived by a widow, three sons, and iivo daughters. Mr. John Jones, a well-known Auckland auctioneer and merchant, died at his residence, King's View Road, Jit. Eden, on Thursday last. The deceased had been in business hew for 25 years, and only retired a few months ago. He was one of the oldest auctioneers in Auckland. The late Mr, Jones was horn in Hull GO years ago, and came out fo New Zealand about 30 years ago. Ho leaves a widow, sis sous, aud two daughters. Mr. M. J. Heywood, who succeeds Mr. AV. J. Speight as manager of the Auckland branch of the Government Life Insuranco Department, was, prior to his departure for Auckland, presented with a gold English lever watch, gold chain, sovereign case, and.trinket by tho agents and staff of the l)unedin branch. -
