A house in Grey Lynn, owned by Mrs. Bryharn, of Uisborne, was destroyed by fire last night, during the absence" of the tenants, Mr. I'ortcous and his wife, who had just taken occupation. They were actually lemoviug the last of their furniture into the building when tho screams from the children attracted their attention. They were removed without injury. S,S. BREEZE LAID UP. Christchurch, October 13. T.he Canterbury Steam Shipping Company's steauior Breeze arrived at Lyttelfon at 8 o'clock this morning from the Bluff. All hands wero paid off this afternoon, only the master and one engineer standing by. Tho vessel will be laid up until such time as a settlement of tho snipping dispute is reached. THE BOY SAVED HIM. Auckland, October 13. A lad named J. i'aulkner saw a man fall off tho Queen Street Wharf yesterday afternoon, and plunged in to the rescue. He found the man had drifted under the wharf, but he seized him and helped him to tho stringers, whenco both wero subsequently rescued. The man, whose name is G. J. Brown, would assuredly have been drowned but for the boy's plucky action. TOLAGA BAY TRAGEDY. Gisborne, October 13. In connection with the Tolaga Bay tragedy this morning the inquiry was first taken on the body of Airs. Keid. The jury returned a verdict as follows:— "Jj'rom the evidonce and letters, the jury are of opinion that the parties lived unhappily, and were continually quarrelling, and that deceased met her death from wounds in neck, but there is no direct evidence to show by whom they were inflicted." An inquest is now being held regarding Keid.
