CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.
{. TAXI-CAB DRIVER ARRESTED. (Uy Tclccraph.-Presß Association.) Auckland, Octobor 13. Tho inquest concerning the death of Charles Goldsmith, who was killed on tho night of October 9, concluded to-day. Deceased was a passenger by an Epsom framcar, and after stepping off the car ho was knocked down by a taxi-cab driven by John William Mercer, and received injuries which resulted fatally. Tho jury returned the following verdict:— "Thai Charles Goldsmith died very suddenly near Owens lioud, Epsom, on October '9, 1911, and that the oauso of his death was fracture of the skull and shock, and that ono John Willian Mercer, tho driver of taxi-cab No. 1103, by his negligent driving, did kill fiio Raid Charles Goldsmith, and is thereby guilty of manslaughter." The following rider was added:— "That the jury aro of opinion that motor-cars should travel at a moderate speed when approaching tramc-ars when they are at slopping-plocos." Mercer was arrested this evening on n charge of manslaughter, and formally chargod and remanded.
