THE TRAMWAYS BILL.
dtoedin opinions (By Telccraph.—Press Association) Dunedin, October 13. ■The proposals introduced by Mr. Davey, M.P., on Wednesday into tho Tramways Bill are by no means received with equanimity by those responsible tor the control of the Dunedin tramways. > Mr. Burnett, in conversation with, a reporter, reierred to the large number of tramway concessions granted lately, and added the opinion that if regulations like the proposed one were to bo imposed, it would simply mean increased fares. He considered it quite possible that they might come in any case, as they were losing money on the trams now. Air. S. i>. Alyers (chairman of the ■ Tramways Committee) said: "Llr. Davoy's amendment would only alfect 11 cars out of 43 in the service provided open cars only lo reconstructed; but if it is compulsory that all combination cars should be altered it will involve the alteration of 29 cars, at an expenso running into many thousands. Tho cars in Dunedin and elsewhere havo already been passed as safe by responsible oilicors of the Government, and it is undoubtedly a hardship on the authorities that private members can step in with amendments which put bodies to thousands of pounds of expenso in making unnecessary alterations." Tho cost of altering tho cars in Dunedin would bo less than in other centres, but it is estimated roughly at least ,£-40 per car. No serious accident has ever occurred to conductors on open cars here. •
