NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Glencoe.l Tho Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting commences at Caulfield to-day. The principal races to bo decided aro the Toorak Handicap, one mile, the Caulfield Stakes, jveigut-for-agc, one milo and a furlong, and tho Caulfield Guineas, for three-year-olds, one mile. In addition to heing engaged in tho Toorak Handicap, Malt King and Lady Medallist aro also in tho Caulfield Stakes, and, if they start in the latter, they will be opposed to Comedy King, Aurofodina, Beverage, Mala, and a number of other good performed

Paritutu is now running ont at New Plymouth, and will not bo taken up again until the summer is well advanced. An effort will then bo made to get the National winner rcaijy for tiho Great Northern SteeplesEbonite, who was given two weeks' spell after the Wanganui meeting, has now resumed work at Trentham. The maiden performer Torawhiti, in C. Pritchard's stables, has been returned to his owner. Weights for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap -are duo next Wednesday. Emma was a treble winner at Bleni licim, and threo times did Katna act as runner-up to the local mare. This form does not tend to exalt ono's opinion of Ivatua. Melbourne files state that a short price was accepted about Motoa for tlio Welter Plato at Mentono last week. Ila got to tho front at the end of a couple of furlongs, and, coming into the straight with a long lead, looked to have the race in safe keeping. He, however, stopped in tho run home, and Atora, finishing well, beat him by a neck. Many of tho spectators thought that Minter should have won on Motoa, but Motoa is not very reliable, and Atora showed at Moonee \ alley that ho is a great finisher. His performance was a first-class one, as he gave Motoa a lead of six or seven lengths from the home tarn. During the Blenheim meeting, the racehorses Inveran, Leahora, and Cingalee were offered for sale, but the last-named was the only one to Changs hands- The price was 11 guineas. it isas reported recently that Mira was lame as a rosult of having picked up a nail. The injury is not likely to prove serious, but it will necessitate the grey colt being stopped in his work. Bracken is to bo schooled over fences, and T. Pritchard will journey to Trentham next week for the purpose of giving him his first lesson. Mr. Corry*s gelding should make a first-class hurdle horse. F. E. Jones rode three winners in succession at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting on Wednesday. Capital acceptances liavo been received for the first day's events at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting, though there is a defection of the three-year-olds, Miscount, Counterfeit, and Masterpiece, from tho Wellington Handicap. It is possible, however, that they will bo produced in the Champion Plate on the second day. Tho Shorts Handicap at Tromtliam usually attracts a good field, but this year with 23 acceptors it apoears as if tho field on the day will ' bo numerically stronger than previously. B. Deeley and J. Conquest, the two Auckland jockeys, who were present at tho Marlborough meeting, returned north yesterday. In discussing the form at the recent Australian Jockey Chili's meeting, a Melbourne writer says that no great significance should be "attached to figures when they run closely. The Metropolitan and Craven Plato running furnishes an eloquent object lesson in this connection. After the two lengths' beating Malt King inflicted on Lady Medallist in the firstnamed race at a difference of 61b-, it looked a sure thing for him to repeat that defeat of the mare when meeting her at a pound better over a mile and a quarter in tho Craven Plato, yet the Maorikinder turned the tables with a length to spare. Malt King's 141b. penalty placed him outside calculations in the Caulfield Cup, and as ho is also not engaged in the Melbourne Cup. his efforts during the impending campaign .in Victoria will be restricted, to fcne wcight-for-ago races. The changed order of running from right to left handed may have an effect on somo of the horses, such as Comedy King, Prince Foote, and Trafalgar, who do not appear to have shown their true form at Eandwick, and in this connection there may be some startling changes when hostilities are renewed at Caulfield and Flemington. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. A.J.C. (Falmerston North)— The Assyrian won iho Melbourno Cup in 1882. FLEMINGTON TRAINING NOTES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oonrriclit Flemington, October 13. On the tracks this morning, Lady Medallist did four furlongs in 51sec. Hart;feir four in 51lsec., Mala three furlongs in SSJsec., Posio four furlongs in 52sec., Woolerina four furlongs in 52sec., Prizefighter four furlongs in Kisec. Broadsword is amiss, aud is an unlikely starter for the Caulfield Cup. FIXTURES. October 11.—Dunedin J. C. Spring. October 21 and 23.—Wellington B.C. Spring. October 23.—Waverley-Waitotara R.C.
