YACHTING.

[Br Maissttekt.] . Opening Season—November 4. Matters in oonneotion with the coming ; season's yachting are looking very busy, j The weather thus far has been very en- j couraglng and the season-s programmo of j i races points to a successful year. The ! yachts that were ready last week were out for a very enjoyable week-end sail. .• The "Anchor." t Wo have received from the publishers, Messrs. Galwev and Co., Sydney, a copy of t'heir latest publication "Tho Anchor." This book is very well got up and its pages are devoted sololy ! to yachting and motor-boating in New Zealand and Australia. The paper con- : tains various photos of yachting, etc. ; and also plans for an eighteen-fool yacht j btsides a great deal of interesting reading matter. Tho iirst issue contains a very up-to-date list of New Zealand yacht- i ing notes. If the following issues of this f publication continue on the same lines as the first, it would bo very welcome to New Zealand yachtsmen. Somo Current Notes. • Yachtsmen will regret to learn of the death of Antony B. Watty, sailmaker, who died recently at the age of 81 years. Some of the sails at present being carried by boats here, are t'ho work of Mr. Watty, and good honest sails they are, too. The Messrs. Moore Bros, have been putting a great deal of work into their yacht Mahina during tho winter. Extensivo alterations to her cabin havo been carried out and it now presents a very homely appearance. In the writer's opinion her owners have shown rather a hardy taste in their choice of paint, but it is a distinct improvement on last season. She will have an cngino installed in her before she comes down. Tho following is tho programme of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club's events for the season 1911-12:—November 4, opening day.; November 11. races; November 25, races; December 2, picnic; December 9, races; Jnnuary 13, races; January 27, picnic; February 3, races; February 10, races; February 17, picnic; February 21.. ocean race; March 9, races; March 10, picnic; March 23, races; March, 30, races; April 8, picnic; April 13, races; April 20, races; and April 27, races. Mr. Frank Tattle, well known in yachting circles, left last week for Sydney. Ho received an enthusiastic send-off from his many friends. Mr. E. Bailey expects to launch Mr. Birnie's new yaoht in about a week's time. This packet has already many admirers. Messrs. Ronayno uad Seatoa launched the ICuraka last Saturday afternoon. This id packet has been well painted and looks exceedingly well. It is the opinion of more than one that if tho Karaka's mast was shifted a littla fuTther forward it might improve her present somewhat dormant sailing capabilities. Tho Munitai is being converted into a yawl, anil will probably be fitted with a small engine. Expressions of opinion on the appearance of the yawl biren have nover been so flattering as .they aro at present. Her appearance gives one tho opinion that lrar crew havo been doing somo hard work, for sho certainly looks better now than sho ever did. The green paint, which was so familiar on this yacht, has boon burnt off, and she is now painted royal blue. Heir silles liavo been scraped and sand-papwed, until finally they aro as smooth as a piece of glass. . Messrs. Gibbs and Boulcott, the_ new owners of the "Wai," are reverting to the cnttor rig, and havo already in place tho 40ft. boom and tho salf. - Mr. Pral Cooke has disposed of his lift. scow to Mr. M. Harden. It is stated that Mr. Ted Bailey has still .another order, in hand, this time a deop-keelci for the new 20ft. class, which will probably bo formed this sonson. A 1 h.p. Colonial engine is to bo installed in tho vawl Wluto Heather. Somo alterations to.her cabin havo been made, her forward bulkhead has been shifted further forward, and a small galley built in aft.
