WELLINGTON STREETS.
» HIGH PRAISE FROM MAYOR OP AUCKLAND. : Correspondent.) Auckland, October 12. Wlile in Wellington during tho last day or so, Mr. C. J. Parr (Mayor of Auckland) made inquiry into municipal administration in the Empire City, and spent some time with Mr. Morton, City Engineer. Speaking to a "Star" representative this morning, the Mavor remarked that in Mr. Morten Wellington had an engineer second to none in Australasia, and ho had come to that conclusion after having seen all of them during the last two months. While in Australia recently, Mr. Parr said, he saw no better streets than thoso in Wellington. The four miles vof wood-blocking laid down eight years ago showed no signs of wear, largely attributable to tho coating of tar and sand they received every year or two. The actual wear on the wood-blocks could not be measured, which Mr. Parr considered was very creditable, especially as tliero was heavy traffic on the main roads. Mr. Morton had for some throe years past been laying down streets in barmacadam. The Mayor saw three streets —Grey, Brandon, and Panama—and they had been excellently done. He saw nothing better in any of the Australian cities. Panama Street had been down nearly three years, and though nothing had been done to it in the meantime it still possessed an even surface, quite ns smooth as Auckland's Queen Street. Mr. Morton was strongly in favour of tho tar treatment in making streets, where the traffic was not heavy, but where tho traffic was heavy he favoured cither wood-blocking or compressed asphalt,
