MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) ' Masterton, October 11. Building operations in Masterton are still animated. A number of important contracts have recently been let, and others are pending. Tlie tender of Messrs. Rose and Mason, at MTdO, has just been accepted for the erection of new premises for the Masterton Farmers' Implement Company, Ltd. A sale of work in aid of the Maori Mission was held in St. Matthew's Schoolroom to-day. Mr. A. J. I'atchett intends eontestiug the Ali'rcdton_ riding of the Masterton County Council at the coming election. At the conclusion of yesterday's meeting of tho Masterton County Council, the chairman (Mr. W. J. Welch) thanked membErs for the kindness and courtesy extended to him timing the period of his chairmanship. Mr. Welch also paid a tribute to the council's staff. Major-General Hogg, whose, sudden death is reported from Auckland, had been in the habit of visiting the Masterton district every season for years past for the trout fishing. Speaking at the meeting of the Masterton Comity Council yesterday, the chairman of that body stated that the proposal to establish an agricultural school in the Wairarapa was one which would appeal to all.sections of the community. It was an institution which was greatiy needed. Mr. H. D. Heberton leaves on Fridnv on a visit to friends in Coylon. The MasteTton Borough Council decided, at its meeting last night, not to allow the Borough Chambers to be let for meetings other than those held in e.onncction with pa'olic affairs. At tho conclusion of tho fortnightly meeting of the Independent Order of Recbaljites last night, a "social" was held in Murray's Hall, at which Mr. C. E. Daniell presided. A musical programme was submitted, and competitions were held. During the month of September 1U cattle, S calves, 610 sheep, 20 lambs, and 62 pigs wero slaughtered at tho Masterton Borough Abattoirs.
