SHAKESPEARE CLUB.
Last evening the public reading of "Othello" by th& Wellington Shakespeare Club was given in the Sydney Street Schoolroom before a large and most attentive audicnce. No one but a Shakespeare could paint suoh a contrast between two men—the subtlety, the knowledge of human naturo and its weaknesses, of lago, and tho simplicity, the faith, tho barbarity of Othello, who has to die when his faitK in goodness is undermined. The club was enterprising when it took "Othello" as its subject, and Mr. Nicholls, who read the part of the .Moor, was completely absorbed in it, and gave somo fine passages. Mr. W. Godfrey, as lago, did not altogether suggest the subtlety of lago nor tho power ho possessed over men. itis reading lacked conviction. Mr. Baldwin, as Cassio. put in some gqod work. Desdemona and Emilia were taken respectively by Miss S. liapley and Mrs. E. S. Baldwin, and tho other characters were as follow:—Mr. J. C. Webb (Duke of Venice, and also Gratiano), Mr. T. D. Kendall (Urabantio, a senator), Mr. W. E. Puller (I/iidovico, and a messenger), Mi-. L. liuckeridge (llodorigo, a Venetian Gentleman). Mr. C. D. Mill (Monta.no, Governor of Cypress). .
