The Timaru A. and P. Association has decided to support the Manawatu proposal that part of the totalisator tax should bo used as subsidies to associations to encourage horse-broeding. ALPS HAULAGE CONTRACT, Timaru, October 8. The Public Works Department has let a contract for tho haulage of 300 tons of material for tho Hermilago building and bridge over the Hooker. The contract will be carried out by traction to Pukaki, but horses must bo employed for 10 miles beyond there. TINIROTO HOUSE BURNT. Gisborne, October 7. A fiTO at Tiniroto destroyed . a sixroomed house owned by Mr. Berry and occupied by Mr. Howell. The occupant's family had difficulty in escaping from tho burning building. GISBORNE'S OIL FIELD. Gisborne, October 7. The New Zealand Oilfields, Ltd., commenced operations at No. 2 bore, near Ormond, yesterday.. No. 1 tore, at Totangi, is 200 ft. down. It is intended to work double shifts and the manager hopes to have results by Christmas. The Gisborne Oil Company is also making good progress with its well at Waitangi. BRIEF MENTION!
