NOTES ANO COMMENTS, [By Gi.encos.l Prior -to the Hastings mooting much interest was centred in the Lowlands 2-ycar-old, Mrs. Wiggs, and it was thought that sho only had to start lo win the big 2-year-old event. She started favourlie, but ran badly, and it was stated afterwards that she was unfortunate at the barrier and collided with another horse. On Wednesday a possible opportunity will bo afforded her of retrieving her lost laurels, for she is onlv opposed by a very weak field—nothing like Iho class which she met at Hastings. Despite his big weight, Bobrikoft', if started in tho Park 'Stakes at Napier on Wednesday, is sure to be the public favourite. The race which the black fellow had at Hastings will work a marked improvement in him. Mr. T, 11. Lowry's horse should also start favourite m the Champion Plate at Trentham and the Stead Cup at Riccarton. To Whctu, in charge of Trainer Altwood, is to leave Feilding for Napier today. Mr. T. Cameron's horso has an engagement in the Open Hurdle Race a.t Greenmmdows on Wednesday, and will be ridden by W. I'oung. T 'iase who intend being present at tho Marlborough meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.should noto that the Mapourika sails at ,'i p.m. to-morrow. This will bo the last boat by which sportsmen will be able to make tho trip. Another attempt is to be made fo get a race out of Gold Thread. Mr. G. I>. Donnelly's mare figures in the list of nominations for-the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, whilo Gold Circle, in the same ownership, has been entered at the Ellensho fixture which takes placo at the same time. The racehorses Toanga, Kopanc, and Embrocation were shipped to Blenheim by the s.s. Arahura on Saturday, M , r - E. J. Watt is leaving Sydney by .next Saturday's boat, and his'colt, Midnight Sun, will be sent back to New Zealand at the same time. It was reported in the city on Saturday evening that Los Angeles was being brought back from Sydney along with the horses trained by It. J. Mason and J. R- I'ranks, When tho Queensland sportsman who races as 'Mr. E. J. Craven" purchased Lady Medallist in the autumn ho stated that he would endeavour to win tho Craven Plato with her. A Now Zealnnder who was present suggested that the Caulfield Cup would be a good race to back her in, and the owner then replied that ho would have a shot at tho double. Tho i£ "'eg" has already been won, and it rather looks as if tho mare has a chance of doing well in the Caulfield Cup, especially when tho handicap is studied. One of her most dangerous opponents, Sandbath, has now been rendered much less formidable by incurring a penalty for his win on Saturday, whilo the success of Lady Medallist in the Craven Plato carried no increased poundage for the Caulfield Cup, which comes up for decision on Saturday week. A large number of metropolitan sppntsmen are leaving here to-day for Blenheim to attend the spring meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club, which takes place ou Wednesday and Thursday. The Patecna has been specially fitted up, and is to take no fewer than twenty-one horses. Inoluded in this number arc W. Davies's trio, First Battery, Abercood, and Royal Marine. W. Price will ride tho two firstnamed, and J. Conquest will bo up on Royal Marine. , It is stated that a number of stay-at-home backers supported Merrio Lad in the Waipatu Hack Race at Hastings in consequence of information received. They were somewhat unlucky not to collect for tho big black gelding was in a winning position at the turn when his diminutive Pilot allowed him to run wide, and ho lost anything from ten to fifteen lengths. AVhcn straightened up he finished very 6trongly, and got within a length of the winner. Of the horses which defeated him, Gold Circle, the winner, is not starting on Wodnesday, and Allurement, the second horse, ho meets on 7lb. bote terms.
Since the race for the Randwick Plato was instituted, Trafalgar is the only horeo that has won it on more than ono occariofl. Tho son of Wallace has now been successful in tho- three last contests for tho event. His winnings are rapidly mounting up, and were ho to be successful in this' year's Melbourne Cup, ho would then have won more money in stakes than any Australian horso other than Carbine., The Duncdin Jockey Club's spring meeting takes place on Wednesday and Saturday next. Trafalgar's time for tho Randwick Plate on Saturday has only onco been equalled in Australia, and that was by Tartan on the same course some years ago. Bridge holds the Australasian record for two miles—3min. 25scc. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Wavorley-Waitotara Racing Club's meeting closo on Friday nest. Weights for the Stewards' Handicap at Riccartoii are not duo until Wednesday week. Acceptances for first day's events at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting close on Friday next. FIXTURES.
