MASTERTON NOTES.

(By Telegraph.—SDccial Correspondent.! Masterton, October 6.

At the annual meeting to-day of tho Masterton Lawn Tenuis Club Dean M'Kenna was re-elected president, and Mr. H. M. Baddiugtou was elected secretary. It was decided to open the season as soon as the courts are ready. Tho annual meeting of the Wairarnpa Athletic Club was held to-night. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit of .£27 13s. lid. Dr. N. H. Prior was elected president, and Mr. J. W. Nicholson secretary. The committee was authorised to fix a date for tho annual sports meeting. Five new members were elected. A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held hero this week before Mr. P. Holly, Commissioner, and assessors, to hear* tho carpenters' and builders' dispute. An agreement was'ultimately arrived at. fixing tho hours of labour at U per week, outsido and inside, and the rates of pay at Is. 4Jd. per hour, with other conditions similar to tho Wanganui and Palmersfcon North agreements. Tho present hours aro 17 per week, and the pay Is. 3d. per hour. A big picnic was held on the Solway show grounds yesterday, this being organised as a recognition by tho townspeople of the splendid work of tho A. and P. Association in providing a park in proximity to the town. Ideal weather prevailed, and the outing was a very enjoyable one. A gymnastic display was given in tho Town Hall last night in , connection with the local branch of tho Y.M.C.A. Thcro was a largo attendance, and a very creditable display was given. Tho proposal of Dr. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, that tho whole of the nursing staft for the Wairarapa Hospitals bo controlled from Masterton, has been approved by the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board.
