LADY GOLFERS.

INTERESTING PLAY AT HERETAUNGA. MISS GOULD DEFEATS MRS ORBELL. MISS BRANDON BEATS THE CHAMPION. Tho visitors who spent (ho day at Herelannga yesterday were again favoured with a glorious day and were treated lo a great' and exciting game. Tho course is in apple-pio order and presented a pretty picture from Iho Club-houso .verandah. In view of her splendid play in (ho previous rounds, .Mrs. Orbell was fully expected to win, but a whisper was going ill"-rounds that Misi Gould was a much letter golfer than nuiiiy thought, and tins was perhaps tho reason Hut (he majority of spectators followed this inatcli. Tho opsning stages saw Miss Gould'got tho load, and this she kept throughout the game. Tho most exciting part oi tho match started from the 13ththc same, as in yestenlav's mulch—and from this hole Mrs. Orbell swnied, to torgo ahead and looked Him pulling the match out of tho lire. Sho had her chance at tho IOUi bole, and her weakness in putting, which was noticeable throughout all her matches, lost: her this hole nnd probably the match also. Sho was driving with great power nnd made somn wonderful drives during tho match, while some, of her recoveries were brilliant. Miss Gould, who plays a very oasy freo game, was bitting a long ball, from which sho gets a long run. Her play Through the green was very good and her putting was sure. This part of her game "•as (o a great extent tho means of her winning a hard-fought battle; She never seems to bo doing anything brilliant or sensational; her golf is always steady and sure; her running-up shots being beautifully played. Miss Brandon again played fine golf and except that on several greens sho milled badly, her play was almost perfect. Miss Collins's play was rather scratchy and she never seemed to settle down, biit has dono well in going so far through the tourney with so little, practice. J. hat the gamo for the coveted titlo to-morrow will lie worth Boeing, there is not the slightest doubt. With both ladies dmng so well and with ti representative oi each island doing battle, it will be very interesting. This is thr second timo i>l ifs Brandon has been in tho final. On tho previous occasion she was beaten bv Mrs. Bovan by a nutt. If she can plav tlio same fiolf as she did ye.-lprdav afternoon, combined with her local kuowlodjm ot the course, sho will make a bold bid for victory; but Miss Gould, who can also produce good golf when wnntcd-as sho proved in her match with Mrs. Ov-boU-will also make a great effort to take the cup south. It will be an even rrnmo and possibly nerves may win mid osp tho itimie. In any case, it is going Ij bo a battle royal. THE CHAMPIONSHIP. RESULTS OF THE SEMI-FINALS. The following aro tho results of the semi-finals for tho New Zealand Ladies' Golf Championship:— , Miss Gould (01 ago) beat Mrs. E. Orbell GSortU Otago)'at the-19th hole. Miss I. Tho game, as was the case yesterday, took a change from this hole, and playing the next holo very well and holing n lovely downhill putt, Mrs. Orbcll won it in i to i, Miss Gould being short in her second and third. The short fifteenth saw Mrs. Orbel! piny a beauty 10 yards to the left of the hole, Miss Gould being just on the- edgo of tlio bank.
