HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Oar Special CorressondenU « RIVER AND ENGINEER. The following wero present at tlio monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board, held on Thursday evoning. Messrs. R. Stevens (chairman), T. A. l'etcrkin, A. E. Hoots, F. J. Pinny, and H. Slndden. The .tender of Mr. E. J. Collett, for ironwork required for boom groynes in the upper reaches of tho river district, vras accepted.' Mr. Sladden brought forward a motion, hold over from meeting, tlio substance of which was that the consulting engineer (Mr. Laing-Meason) bo asked to make six inspections of tho river works per annum. In speaking to the motion, Sir. Sladden stated that a periodical inspection was imperative for insurance purposes alono. Tho fee was very low. Mr. Potorkin: What is the feo?
Mr. Sladden: Three guineas a visit. Proceeding, the speaker said that he took oxception to the publication of certain letters by tho chairman when the letters in question were withheld at tho board's meeting. Mr. Stevens had said that the ongineer received three guineas for attending a meeting, when it was well known that Mr. Meason only charged for inspection. The fact that the district was immune from Hoods was directly duo to the work of tho engineer, and tho fee charged was well earned. The chairman moved, by way of amendment: "That tho board adhere to its policy in respect to the engineer, and that the inspection be not authorised." Upon being put tho amendment was carried.
A report on the current progress of river works was submitted by the inspector, Mr. Jti. Jb'ishcr.
