CITY COUNCIL.
THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. The, Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) presided, and there were present Councillors J. Smith, 1". Cohen, G. Frost, ,T. Trevor, A. I!. Atkinson. J. Ciodbor, L. M'Kciwic, AV. IC. 11.I 1 . Barber, J. K. Fitzgerald. ,T. Fuller. R. Cameron. A. 11. Hiiidmarsh, E. Fletcher, and U. Shirfeliffe. The following recommendations of the Finance Committee were adopted:— That a liu. temporary water main be extended along Oraugi Kaiipana Uoad, provided the property owners will pay Iho cost of labour involved. That a claim for land taken at. tho corner of Grant Koad and Park Street for the Wadestowu tramway be settled. That the council insist upon properlyholders connecting Iheir liouses in tho outlying districts to the dr;iinage system at onco where tho statutory notices had already expired. It was resolved that the City Engineer bo authorised to wlect the track most likely to be convenient for tho residents of Melrose Crescent and Sutherland Crescent through tho Xcwtowu Park, and to form the .same.
Tho City Reserves Committee reported that they had given instructions to havo all the Town Halt sections at Oriental Hay and Mount Victoria that have been cleared of gorso by the reserves department resumed immediately, subdivided, into areas of 3. 5 or 7 acres, according to the nature of tho land, upset rentals fixed and re-let.
It was decided that the claim of tho Armorduct Company for payment of cost of the drums, on which the wire contracted to be supplied by them to the council was wound be not granted, as tho specification required that tho wire was to bo supplied on drums. That the request of the Dunedin City Council that the Wellington. Council join with them in a test case in connection with tho payment of duty on Transformer oil be not acceded to.
That the wages of throe employees in tho tramways department be made up to full fer the time they were incapacitated through accidents sustained whilst on duty.
Increases in salaries in tso Fire Brigade Department were granted as follow. —Superintendent, ,£350 to .£365; deputysuperintendent, «£2OO to .£210; senior station officer or foreman, .£3 os. 7d. to £3 Is. per week; station officer (1), £2 Us. sd. to £2 16s. per week; station officer (2), .£2 12s. sd. to ,£2 14s. per week; senior firemen, £2 Bs. to £2 10s. per week; firstclass firemen, .£2 6s. Id. to ,£2 Bs.; secondclass firemen, £2 3s. 9d. to .£2 6s. per week; third-class firemen, ,£2 Is. sd, to ;£2 3s. per. week; probationers, £1 18s. sd. to £2 per week; motormen, £2 7s. 6d. to .62 10s. Tho total increases amount to .£9l Bs. 2d.
