Tho directors of tho Wellington Cordage Company, Ltd., have purchased tho okl show grounds at l'ctono, and orders for the machinery havo been cabled to England and America. Plans for tho factor}' buildings hare been prepared, and tenders for their erection clow shortly. It is expected that the factory will bo in full working order about February 1, 1012. HUTT FIRE BRIGADE. Tho annual meeting of tho Lower Hutt Fire brigade was held in tho station building on Wednesday cveniug. Tho balance-shout showed that as far as tho general account was concerned tho brieado was not in a very satisfactory position. Tho credit was .£3 2s. 3d., and unless a change for tho bettor was brought about shortly it was tho general opinion of members that tho Borough Council would bo required to render financial assistance; otherwise tho brigade would not bo able to carry on. Tho sick and accident fund was in a bettor position, it showing a credit balance of £17 ISs. sd. Officers for the ensuing year woro elected as follow:—Captain, Mr. T. Slinn; lieutenant, Mr. G. M. M'llvrido; foreman, Mr. .1. Doron; assistant foreman, Mr. F. Vj. Collettj secretary, Mr. H. Baldwin, hon. surgeon, Dr. Hector; executive, committee, Messrs. Dovereaui, Hobiuan, and Collctt. BUSINESS ASSOCIATION. An endeavour is being made at Peione to form an association of business people, on similar lines to those in cxistoiy?e in other centres. Tho step has been taken mainly because of the largo number of calls which an> constantly mado Tor subscriptions and contributions to bazaars and various other "benefits." Ono of the rules of tho new association would prohibit this under tho imposition of a penally. Preliminary steps which are now being taken arc meeting with considerable success. THE RURAL COURSE.

The Potono Technical School Board has decided to proas the Wellington Education Board to a definite settlement of tho question of obtaining adequate provision for the housing of pupils from the l'etono High School.
