The postal authorities advise that the 6.5. Councillors Atkinson, Barber, MTJenzie, Godber, and Trevor have been appointed a sub-oommittce to confer with a subcommittee of the Technical Education Board on the question of a site for the Technical School. Mr. D. M'Laren suggested to the Minister for Education yesterday morning that the Department should grant special assistance to public libraries that had juvenile departments. Theso institutions were called upon, among other things, to send out books to tho schools. No dcyibt the city authorities would bear a portion of tho cost, but the Government should also assist. Tho Minister promised to institute inquiries. The tender of Mr. J. Manning has been accepted by Messrs. W. F. Shortt, Ltd., for alterations to and tho setting back of their premises in Willis Street. The portion of the building now used by Messrs. Shortt, Ltd., will bo converted into a moving picture theatre, while the firm's furniture business will bo transferred to tho shop and showrooms adjoining tho theatre. The whole building is being considerably altered and improved. Tho new front will have a handsome and imposing appearance. _ Tho whole work is to bo completed before Christmas. Tho wages of the coach-joiners at tho Wellington tramway car sheds are to be raised from Is. id. to Is. -tld. per hour, to bring them into lino with fho Carpenters' Award. Permission is to bo granted to tho expressmen to erect a. telephone on the Lambton Quay stand on the northern end of tho railway station, subject to permission being obtained from tho Railway Department, and to the position of tho box being approved by tho City Engineer. A resident of Claremont Terrace, who desire* to have a street lamp installed, applied to tho City Council in terms of liis wish. Ho is to bo informed that on payment of .£7O the council will .erect the lamp and keep it lighted in perpetuity. Houso illuminating on the instalment plan was tho subject of a report to tho City Council last evening by the Tramways Committee. Up to the present 170 deferred payment contracts have been made, totalling i 1328 4s. Sd. On August 31, 1911, £M 15s. Gd. was owing on these agreements, .£759 9s. 2d. having been repaid. A total amount of *£Gt 3s. lOd. has been charged under tho 5 per cent, interest scale.
The express stand at the corner of Taranaki Sheet and Courtenay Place is to bo shifted to the south side of the reserve, and the stand will bo paved with old blocks. Respecting tho claim of tho \Yostport Coal Company for land taken for tho AVntbstown tramway at the corner of Molesworth Street and Tinakori Koad, tho City Council has decided that tho matter should be left io tho Compensation Court to settle. The Department of Public Health has prepared a scheme for tho medical inspection of school children. It is intended that dental examination shall be a feature of the system.

Tho time for receiving entries for the teachers' D and C certificate examinations of January, 1912, has been extended to October 15, 1911, or with lato fees until October 31.
Xo fishing permits are- to be granted for the Upper Karori reservoir, nor for Wainui, above the dam. This is in accordance with a resolution made by the City Council last night.

The Congested Areas Committee of tho Wellington City Council is to meet next week to consider matters concerning the proposals for the improvement of "congested areas."
The scarcity of flounders in New Zealand is becoming remarkable. A few years ago the fish could bo obtained in large quantities at about 2Jd. por lb., and the fish are now exceedingly scaroo at about four times that price. Strango to fay the bulk of the flounders consumed in, and dispatched from, Wellington comes from the Thames. A few boxes come from Picton- and Napier, Hawke's Bay having at ono time hail the monopoly of tho ftoumiw trodo of Wellington. Of recent months the flounder is almost extinct on tho East Coast, and many of the trawlers tliat formerly were worked remuneratively have becmsont to other parts of the Dominion. A few of the fleet are, howover, still working behind the Kidnappers and Port Alnrriri.
Tho City Council is going to oontributo £5 towards the cost of six performances to be given by tho Tramways Band, under engagement 'to the Miramar Borough Council.
