October i, 9.5 p.m.) J Sydney, Octobd 1 [ The German mail steamer has broughi ■ news of tlio murder of Captain Broettci > in German New Guinea. J Captain Broctter's schooner, carrying e ' crew of four Europeans and twenty natives, was exploring the coast norUi-wcsf of FriodrichffilielnishaTcn. Captain Broetter and another European were examining a river when they were surrounded by natives, and Captain Broetter was fatally speared. His companion escaped, and, floating down tlio river on a log, found that the schooner had disappeared. It is feared that tlio rclroucr foundered in a storm with all hands. Tlio German authorities have dispatched a punitive expedition to the scene of the murder.
