Yesterday afternoon Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., continued his inquiry into the circumstances touching the death of an infant child named' John Greeks. At the inquiry on Monday it was stntcd that the child had been born on September 7. aiid had died oil September 30. The parents were a married man and a young, woman' resident in one of .Wellington's 1 ' suburbs. 'It' had. further been stated that, he had not teen nursed by his mother when removed, and that o, doctor had anticipated that, there would i? difficulty in the rearing'ef it.
Yesterday Alice Stuart Dick, district agent for the-Infant Life Protection' Society in the Wellington district, deposed that the cote had como under her notice on September 0. A woman had called at her offico (the v;oman did not eivo her name, but it was Mrs. Ansticoj to ask the names of- sonic licensed homes in which 1 an infant could be placed. Witness had hesitated as to replying. because Mrs. Anstice had said'that'the child was only two days' old, and of premature birth. Witness, however, save some names, but. told Mrs. Anstice that none of. the foster-mothers would be permitted to take the child without a doctor's'certificate setting forth that it was safe, to remove it. Witness then communicated with Dr. ■Bowerbarik, and ho replied that, under the circumstances, lie would forbid the removal of the child. Witness's sister (Mrs- Johnston) went to see the child, and then found that it had been removed. The Coroner said that there was no evidence that the child had been wrongly treated. As to the precedent conditions, ho could not say much. By "precedent conditions" he meant "that the child had como when it. was not wanted," and it was taken from tho mother so that she mifjht not become too fond of it. "The circumstances are very lamentable indeed," he concluded. "I find that the child died through inanition."
