SECOND TRAIN WHEN POSSIBLE. Tho intention of the Department of luulwaya regarding tho provision of additional passenger express trains was explained by the Minister for Railways to a reporter last evening. Refea-ring to a statement made by him in' the Houso of iiepresentativos recently regarding tho loss on tho extra express during the summer holiday season, Mr. Millar said that up till the time wlie.a tho' ordinary service was resumed, the traffic on tho extra trains was falling off. Apparently tho pooplo had bccomo so used to tho ordinary through time-table that they did not patronise the additional trains. Another opportunity of testing tho needs of the pul> lie would be given during tho approaching summer excursion season, when tho doubio service would bo .provided. As Sool ' °; s tt'® volume of traffic onsured a profitable result, tho second express northwards and southwards would be permanently instituted. Regarding tho references which havo been made to the moro frequent service Sr-n Invoroargill-Lyttelton line, Mr. Millar said that there was some inisappror . s , lon regarding tho relativo positions ot tho two iTuiiK services. Thero was only ono through train each wav daily from Wargill to Lyttelton, a clistana) 0 i . second express running only between Dunedin and Christclmrch, while tho North Island through express' was over a distance of 456 miles.
