SCHOOL CASUALTIES.
AND MEDICAL EXPENSES, An interesting topic- for discussion at tho meeting; of the Tenchcirs' Institute on. Friday was. a motion by -Mr. J. B. Hopkirk (Brooklyn School): "That this .in- , stitnto take active stops to have legislation enacted that no teacher shall be responsible ' for a medical fee, when in case of sudden illness.or accident ho summons* a medicitl doctor to the assistance of u. pupil." Speaking to tho motion, Mr. Hopkirk quoted instances wheh> teachers' had victimised. On ono occasion a pupil at his school had injured his. ankle. A doctor had to be summoned. Tlio parent subsequently left the district without paying flic dootoT's fee, and the teacher nad to pay. This was a matter of concern to teachers throughout New Zealand. Mr. E. 11. ■ Bullachoy thought that tho question was one for tho New: Zealand .Institute to deal with. He suggested that motion might lip considered as 'a remit from the Wellington ■branch to tho New Zealand Conference in January next. , Mr. ltuublyn'deprecated any action of the kind contemplated. His experience of'such cases was that medical men did not ask for fee. ' ' Mr. BaV.ae.liey added a suggestion that the-branch institute might deal with such caaes—which ■ we're not many—out ol its funds. .. ~ . t l In reply the mover said that what was drafted was that any liability of tins kind should bo removed from the teacJiors and placod upon tho parents; After'further discussion the motion was | put and lost by seven votes to five.
