SETTLEMENT.

' NEW SCHOOL OPENED. j ' Residents of tho Nornwndale Settlement, which is situated just above tho | Lower Hui.t Station, gathered in largo numbers at tho opening of their new' sohocl on Saturday afternoon. The school is a most up-to-date building, of modern equipment, and is within easy reach of all the settlers. Mr. T. M. AVilford, in declaring the school opon, said tho school would meet all requireiuenls at present, and ho hoped that in time tho attendance, which would at present average about 10, would double. Jlr. R. Loo (chairman of tho Beard of Education) said although the building was small it had all (ire essentials of an up-to-date school. lie was very pleaded to sco such a transformation. Thirty years ago a whare was used for a school, not far from tho present spot. Ma-. Adams (a member of tho committee) then moved that tho best thanks of settlers be accorded the Education Board, Mr. Lee, and Jlr. Wili'ord for the erection of such a beautiful school. The motion was carried by acclamation. Excellent afternoon tea, presided over by Mesdames Bell, Harris, Wagner, Barnes, and Adams, was handed round. .The School Committee, Messrs. R. Bell (choirmanl, W. Harris, W. Barnes, J. Warner, and J. Adams, are deserving of much c.redit for the way they worked to clear the site and tho playground. Mr. Jlarwood was tho builder of tho school. 'Amongst the visitors present wero Mr. and Mrs. Yeats, Revs. J. Jones, J. M'Caw, Barton, and GingeT, Dr. Hector, Mr. and Mrs. W. Russell, Professor von Zetlitz, Mr. H. Baldwin, and Councillor N. Welch. . In t.he evening a very enjoyable dance was held in honour of the occasion, at which the.ro was a large attendance.
