RAILWAY TELEPHONES.
COMMUNICATION WITH TABLET'' STATIONS, One of the resolutions carried at tho last Dominion Conference of the Farmers' Union urged that all tablet-stations should bo connected by telephone with post office.' Tho Atinistcr of Railways, in reply to the resolution, has informed the secretary of the union (Mr. E. C. Jack) that at most of the stations the: tablet porters are placed in charge for tho purpose of facilitating train running, and as a general rule their duties are restricted to the work in connection with the running of trains and the signalling thereof. In many cases the traffic at tablet stations is not sufficient to warrant tho placing of an officcr in cliargo except for tho train-running work, and tho minister expresses regret that he cannot sec his way to givo any general authority for tablet porters to undertake the custody of goods and advising of consignees when goods arrive. If, however, representations are made in regard to any particular station, it is stated that inquiries will be made, and if the circumstances warrant it, tolephano connection with the nearest post office will bo provided.
