VIEWS OF THE MINISTER FOR lUIJjWAYS. Replying to tho resolution passed at tho Dominion Conferonco of tho Farmers' Union in regard to tho weighing of produca conveyed-by rail tho Hon. J. A. Millar has advised tho secretary- of tho union that tho weighing of goods conveyed by rail is undortake.il for the purpose of computing the freight charge and not as a basis on which to scttlo transactions. Tho greatest caro is taken to ensure tho accuracy of tho railway weights and weighbridges are regularly tested from time to time, but tho defendant cannot ■undortako the responsibility of certifying as to tho correctnosa of tho weights for t'rado purposes. Tho communication concludes as under:—"Tho extent to which weight certificates are asked for from ths Department is a tribute to the acpnracy of the Tailway weighing generally, and when tho number of weighing transactions that aro performed throughout tho year, and tho vatying circumstances under which tho work is carried out, ar» taken into consideration the instances in which tho weights supplied by tlie.DejpaTtment aro inaccurato aro infinitesimal."
