NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, September 29. The heavy rain, which fell all night, rondered the going fairly heavy for today's races, and, as it was still falling whon tho racing commenced, the attendance fell away. Backers fared a littlo better than was tho caso yesterday, but several strong favourites wero defeated. Tho weather had cleared somewhat when the contestants went out for tho Owen Handicap. Tho betting was remarkably ovon, signifying that tho issuo was open. Royal Scotch began very smartly, and led down tho back from St. Toney and Gold Battery, with Faunus somo distanco back, and True Shot, who was badly left a long way behind. Morry Frank, who took an outsido course, got round the bottom bend safely, and challenged Eoyal Scotch as they swung into tho straight. The latter had only to bo shaken up to win comfortably, and ho was evidently a much improved horse for his gallop on tho first day, Tnie Sliot wasblso improved, and'his effort in gitting third, after being badly loft, was a good one. Ireland, meeting his field on much worso terms than was tho case yesterday, was again made a good favourito to-day, hut, after having every chanco to win, ho was beaten on his merits by Tiwari, who went out unbacked, and paid a long price. Taft showed out for about fivo furlongs, but could not go on when Ireland asserted himself. Monologue and Patriotic .wero conspicuous at the turn, but Tiwari on the outsido then swung round, and, galloping over everything, he won easily. Espartero was tho most fancied runner in the Open Hurdles, from which Waiputore was withdrawn., Reumac,' though looking on tho jolly side, was also much fancied, but Gaelic revelled in tho going, which by now was very heavy, and, onco ovor tho last fence, ho came away and won by a length. Tho favourito wag scarcely mode enough uso of, and, had his rider elected to come away earlier, 110 would liavo been well clear of tho others at tho last. fence. That advantage may have given him tho race. Waipaku, who was brought from Foxton in the morning, was mado favourito in tho Hack Hurdles, with Hawick and Cap. tain Bell in that order. Wnipaku and Ambergris set a fast paco ovor tho first mile, when they tired, and Captain Hell went to the front. Highden challenged at tho last fence, but Captain Bell mado tho hotter jump, and ran in a comfortable winner. Ambergris was a long way back third. Then camo Waipaku and ilawick. The Rover was tho only withdrawal from tho Higgio Handicap, which proved to 1)0 a good thing for the Highden horse Bonnerses, who allowed Shuja to mako tho paco to tho homo turn. Boanerges then came on, and won easily from lynuroa, while his stahlo companion, Kilostori, finished third. The last-named was unlucky not to bo second, for Kauroa was pushed out by Shuja at the homo turn, and he earned Kilostcri out very wide, causing him to loso several lengths. The winner is engaged, in the New Zealand Cup, and his victory to-day has caused him to come into the market. ICilosteri's performance was equally good and, as yet, it must remain an open question, which is the hotter of the pair over a distance. Mondip, who was well backed, ran well to tho turn, but then retired beaten. A useful field of eight horses went to the post for the Mile Hack race. labour Day was a strong fancy, and sho won after a good race with Olahu, who was unlucky at tho barrier. Jargon, a well-backed candidate, ran badly, and was evidently not 'suited by the going. Melologuo appeared to liavo a chanco at the turn, but she faded out in tho run down tho straight. A rank outsider—Miscal—brought off a big surprise in the Marangai Handicap. Iranui, Jlerrivonia, and Countermine wero all well tacked. The first-named ran a great race, hut she is not quite ready, and failed to stay on under her weight. Miscal took charge at the half-mile po«t, and after an interesting finish, won by a length.
