A BUSY FIRM.

No firm lias played a more important part in building Picton—in fact, in miglit bo said in building Marlborough—than Messrs. G. A. Smith and Co. This firm commenced business in 1872, and 6inco then they have put up all tho principal buildings in Picton, and many others in all parts of the province. A large portion of the Picton wharf was also built by tho firm. At the present time they they are building a new and up-to-date entertainment hall, from plans prepared by Mr. Charlesworth, of Wellington. Messrs. Smith and Co. have a modern sash and door factory, at which a largo staff of artisans is kept constantly employed. The factory is vcplpto with all tho latest appliances for turning out. work quickly and well. They supply everything required for a building, and guarantee that (heir prices cannot' bo approached by outside competitors. An idea of tho volume of trade dono by this progressive firm is pained from the large stock of timber which is carried at their Picton yards. A shipment of timber is received weekly from Brownlee's Ifil], Havclock, and tho stock «n hand rarely falls below half a million feet. They guarantee to use nothing but thoroughly seasoned timber in all the buildings which tJiey erect, and this fact, together with the" thorough manner in which all their work is carried out, explains tho reason why they aro able to carry such large stocks, and keep a big staff constantly employed.
