JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
-4 NO AISLE CARS WANTED. (By Tclccraoh.—Soccial Corresoondent.) Wanganui, September ,28. The by-elcction for the Castlecliff Town Board resulted in tlio return of Mr. S. T. Ashton, who bent four other candidates by a comfortable majority. The Waitotara County Council took a poll of ratepayers yesterday on a proposal to raise a loan of .£5-300 for roads and bridges. The proposal was carried by a large majority. The new Technical College was officially opened this evening by Mr. Geo. Fowlds. The Wanganui Borough Council has decided to ask members for the district to oppose the Tramway Amendment Bill, the chief ground of objection being a provision that all future cars be built with a passage from end to end, and that 10 per cent, of the existing cars bo altered yearly so as to have a similar pas?acre. The council is of opinion that such' a type of car does not permit the ingress and egress of passengers as expeditiously as side-entrauce cars; that, with a centre aisle, car conductors would be encouraged to give starting signals while standing inside the car, thereby increasing the risk of accident to passengers; also, that the seating capacity of cars would be reduced, which would necessitate providing more cars at considerable capital, and running cost to the undertaking, or limitation of carrying capacity.
