Tho first announcement by tho Press Association cablegram in regard to tho result of tho voting in Maine on the subject. of Prohibition gave a slight, majority in favour of the retention of the law. A cablegram received subsequently by tho Provincial Council of "the trade" staled that there was a majority of 26 in favour of repeal. TJio New Zealand Alliance has now received the following cablegram, in response to an inquiry:— "Maino—Prohibition victory." Tho American "Review of Reviews" for September states:— In Maino the fight is not to get Prohibition into tho Stato Constitution, but to keep it there. Prohibition in Maino ante-dated by many years tho constitutional amendment adopted under tha leadership of tho Republican party- in ' 188), but prior to that year the fiquor traffic had been interdicted by statutorv enactment alone. Should the result of the election to bo held this month bo favourable to tho repeal of the amend- . ment, the anti-liquor laws of tho State - would still remain on the statutory book, ■ and tho Democratic party, which is now in power in the State, would have to : tuke the responsibility of repealing th«m ' before Maine would become legally "wet,"
