WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

The Labour Department lias a fairly extensive workers' dwellings' programme in prospect at present. Some '22 cottages are. to be erected in Wellington shortly, 1G in Christchurch, and 22 in: Auckland. In Temuka Timaru, and Palmerston North also sufficient applications have boon received to permit of building operations going ahead as 1 soon as the necessary preliminaries arc completed. Th'Cro is also some request for homes in Wanganui, whero sufficient land has been acquired at Gonville, near the site of tho new bridge, for about Alteon allotments. Land fins been purchased at Napier, too, but it is twenty minutes' walk from the centre of the town, and no applications have yet been received for houses. At Timaru and Tcinuka land has been made available. At Timaru there have already been received sufficient applications to justify building, and there have also been several at Temuka. It is worth remark that not a single application has been •made in Dunedin. Altogether in tho ,nthcr thro? centres, 'and in Timaru, Temuka, and Palmerston, it is probable that something like 100 houses will bo put in baud to be finished about Christmas time. In Wellington the houses are to be built at Island Bay, near the Duppa Street Park. The average cost of the cottages will be about MOO, and it is expected that tenders will bo called next week for the erection of them. Another piece of land at Taitville, which the Department is having- cut up into allotments, is still being surveyed. 1
