THE ZOO.
. MR. LE SOEUFS REPORT. In April last tho City Council called upon Mr. A. Sherbourno Le Soeuf, Director of tho Sydney Zoo, to provide a report on tho Wellington Zoo. Mr. Lo Socuf came here, gave several interviews, a lecture or so, and supplied tho council with a report on tho Zoo. Nearly everything he wroto was good; the Zoo was in the main very well managed, and the site was a very good one. Some of tho animals were too fat, but there was nothing much wrong in a general way. lie recommended a few alterations, which have been effected. Tho report went to the Reserves Committee of tho council, and the committee reported to tho council in Juno last. Discussion of tho main report of Mr. Lo Soeuf was, however, held over for a special meeting of the council held last night. When tho time came for discussion of it, however, tho council decided that there was nothing to talk about—tho whole report was as dead as that other sea lion. Several councillors had a word or two to. say. Mr. Fuller was afraid tho Zoo was iikely to develop into an institution too big for our • means, and Mr. Hindmarsh wanted to know whether the council knew how deep the mud was in the deer paddock. The only point of any moment, made was Mr. Fitzgerald's. When he saw that tho report was not to bo discussed lie made complaint J,!mt the, council had never had an opportunity of saying whether the expense of bringing over Mr. Lo Soeuf had been justified. Tho opportunity never came, for someone moved that tho council adjourn, and it adjourned.
