(From Our Special Correspondent.! ■ * ATTITUDE OF CHURCH BODY. TO DEFENCE ACT. At a meeting' of (lie Petone Fellowship, hold last Sunday for the purpose of discussing tlis Defence Bill, a resolution protesting against the compulsory clauses in the Act was unanimously carried. In speaking to tho resolution several pr:ssnt remarked . that tho conscience clause was archaic and absurd, and the clause relating to tho forfeiture of citizenship on tho part of boys refusing to register also caused protest. Those taking part in tho discussion were the Rev. A. J. Seamer, and Messrs. J. Jacobsen, Whittaker, and Ross. At the close of the meeting, two delegates were appointed to attend tho forthcoming conference in AVollington- of antimilitarists.
■\VESLEYAN CONFERENCE. Tho Wtsleyan Dominion Sunday School Convention opens at the Wrslev Church, Taranaki Street, this evening. An address of welcome will bo given by the president, and this will bo followed by a paper by the Rev. T. T. Thompson on Sunday school ami church attendance. Delegates, —ministers and laymen—will be pro- , sent from all parts of New Zealand, and many subjects of interest will be discussed. The sessions of tho convention will be open to tho public. On Wednesday evening a conversazione will be tendered to the visitors in the Wesley Hall. LAWN TENNIS. The Wesley tennis court was opened on Saturday afternoon at Petone, a good, attendance being present. Set games were played, and afternoon tea was dispensed by 'lady members. The excellent asphalt courts '(stated by experts to ba among the finest in the Dominion) have been surfacedress:d, and should be great centres of activity during the summer months. DOMINION DAT. The only celebration in connection with Dominion' Day in tho Hutt .Valley, was the saluting of the flags at tlie schools. At tho Fetone District High School several members of the committee gave addresses, and at Lower Hutt and Petone Wost short speeches were also made by tha headmasters. The Petona Railway Workshops observed a holiday, and,tho offices of Hutt and Petone Councils were closed. yesterday being Dominion Day the Petone and 'Lower Hutt Borough Councils did not hold their usual meetings. The Lower Hutt Council meets to-night, and the Petons Council will hold its meeting to-morrow.
