THE FIELD OF FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON'S TOUR.

DECISIVE VICTORY AT CHRIBTCHURCH.

SATURDAY'S CITY EVENTS.

The last club match of the season for tho Charity Cup was played on the Athletic Park on Saturday before a small crowd of spectators. Tho playing teams were the champions (Athletic) and the runncrs-up, who happened to bo tho challengers (Oriental). The result was a comfortable win for Athletic by 11 points to nil.

The game was not specially remarkable lor good football. Neither team was represented by full playing strength, nnd neither side took tho came seriously. The Blues were, short of several of their best players, who wero with the representatives ou tour, and Oriental did not play a ■ singlo senior Kick. Consequently they showed none of the. brilliant attack which is a feature of their play when they arc really out for business. Tho gamo opened with a-typical charging rush by tho Uluc forwards, followed a minute or two later by a passing run, which threatened the Black and White's lino. A dropped pass saved the, challengers for the time being, but they were in serious trouble for some time afterwards. Tho Black and White forwards in the end fought their way up to mid-field, and then to Hie Blues' quar-ter-line. There an .extraordinary tiling happened. There was a siuHonly-fprined scramble, which enveloped tho referee, Jlr. I , '. Larway, and he emerged from it with a damaged wrist, which hurt necessitated his retirement from the field. Air. Church caino on to control the gnme in his stead, and Athletic, opening irom a free-kick, rushed the ball up to tho Oriental twenty-five. Here Atkinson Rot the ball from ,tho ruck, and initiated a really good passing rush, in which MTonnJu, (josling, S. Wilson, and Hutcheson joined, the last-named scoring a really good try. The shot at goal missed. Athletic, 3; Oriental, 0. It was only a short while later when the Blues' noxt try camo. as a result of tho Blues' forwards overwhelming tho Black and White's defence. The ('•id of a series of hot scrambles was that Lovick sce-ircd the ball, and fell- over tho lino with it. Again tho kick at goal fniled. Athletic, G; Oriental, 0. Part of tho second spell was decently fought, but it was not long before Atkinson again made a clever break, which left Wilso,., when given the ball, to score between the posts. He took the kick himself and goalcd. AthIptic. 11; Oriental, 0. The rest of the gamo was not treated by players or public as a serious business. Athletic regarded victory as certain, and did not strive for more points, wherws the Oriental players seamed satisfied that they could not get the cup this season.
