CRIPPLING THE RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE.
Sir,—l was staggered to read in a recent issue of your paper an admission by (ho Prime Minister that something liko 3000 voters were disenfranchised in Wellington Sduth owing to muddlemcnt, and that abominable ■ system , introduced bv ■ this Government—the "electoral census. , ' What is this country coming to? Bit by bit the rights of the people are being infringed. We have had examples under this Government of "spoils for the' victors,"—people boycotted for their political opinions—but up, to the present the electors have been allowed to record their votes with some degreo of freedom.
What is the meaning of it? What need for this iniquitous census roll at all? Sir, I look upon the whole thing as a monstrous trick, and would urge every voter to put their names on tho roll now, regardless of any statement the Primo Minister may make. A nice look out for Dominion Prohibition, 3000 voters struck off the roll in a dry olectorate! Sir, the people, smarting: under theso injustices, nnd tyrannised over in this manner, will bo forced to get- redress by taking the law into their own hands. I hope you will urge the people through the columns of your widely-read paper to gather in protest at tho Town Hall, and compel tho Government to givo the people justice. It is sickening—and they call this a democracy.—l am, etc., PROHIBITIONIST.
