Tho Maheno arrived at Auckland from Sydney at .12.15 p.m. yesterday. She brought English and Australian mails, the Huithern portion of which will arrive in Wellington by this. afternoon's Main Trunk express. Tho postal authorities advise that English and American mails, via San Francisco, Tahiti, and Rarotonga, are due in Wellington on Thursday, October 12. Hermann Lewis, a claim of .£IBOO alleged to be due in connection with balance of commission on tho salo of tho Mokau Block, which was to havo been heard in the Supreme Court today, has been settled out of Court. The amount paid is ,£125, which is in payment of solicitors' costs. On October 12 next, his Excellency Lord Islington will present a certificate of honour of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem to Constable Sleeth for his gallantry in saving a child's lifo in tho streets of Wellington. Tho ceremony will take place at Government House at 3.30 p.m. The short length of tramway line between the corner of Willis Street, and the G.T\O. is now completed and ready for traffic, but it will not bo used for a week or two until tho City Engineer's men havo finished the wood-blocking on tho roadway alongside. Tho running of cars would hamper tho gang in their work, and the excavation also would be dangerous to passengers alighting. The line has been constructed mainly to open a new route, through tho town in case of a block on tho liuns in Lnmbton Quay by a fire or Eomn other circumstance, but it mav bo used also as a m-uiar line, along which somo of tho Willis .Street cars may bo run. Some of tho traffic which now goes past tho Town Hall may also bo sent along it. All these matters will be settled when Iho new time-table, now under consideration, is being finally drafted. Tho time-table would probably have ,beon running now but for tho difficulties that have cropped up in suiting tho needs of Karori and Miramar. and fitting in their requirements .with those of tho city.
A deputation representing settlers of the Dyerviilo i-lettlement was introduced to Sir Jcsoph Ward on Saturday by Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P. It was explained by Mr. Daysh, as .spokesman, that on part of tho settlement tho land was dependent for water upon two water races which were constructed before tho Government purchased the In n<l, nid under (ho terras of their leases the settlers were to have the use of the water and maintain tho rodes m order. The cost of maintenance was .£lO or i'so a year, but the Government in reading the settlement had so injured the raws that their maintenance now cost about «CllO a year. The settlers, therefore, claimed from the, Government assi.4amo in so improving the water races that the maintenance would not cost more than formerly. Mr. M'Lcod, tho Feathorston County chairman, asked that the roads— one of which he mentioned had a jrrade of 1 in 9—should be improved before the dry season camo on, as failing alterations tho dairy farmers would be short of water. Sir Joseph Ward promised that an engineer should be sent at once- to inspect and see what was required, if one was available.
Mr. John Brodie, Independent Liberal candidate for the Wellington Knst election, will address electors at O'Doniiell's Hall, Kilbirnie, on Wednesday next, nt 8 p.m.
