PROTECT THE BIRDS.
■ Sir,—Will you kindly accept this letter on behalf of thoso who cannot speak for themselves? Pastoralists and others aro already discovering that wo cannot do without our small assistants. Grubs and blight abound since such a war has been waged against the small birds. In our own district—a very prosperous ono—the little creatures havo been destroyed by hundreds at a time; they exist for some wiso purpose, wo cannot doubt, and in all our country's prosperity who can grudgo them n few grains in compensation. What would tho a\r bo without these bright and cheerful creatures of His handiwork? Do we wish to becomo mero materialists? A rational view of these matters leads one away from such
a thought, thcro is more in lifo tlian selfinterest and money-making. Let men consider that, birds have their part to play in tho great'scheme of creation, anil that, it is foolish in - tho extreme to destroy, such useful servants, or to import owls to do so; Our harvests and our fliecp runs will suffer if the wholesalo destruction of small birds continues. Having leisure for observation and the trend of events, I say this as warning.—l am etc., EYE-WITNESS.
