NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.l Tho Avondalo Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded to-day. Ownors aro reminded that 'acceptances for tho first day's events at. tho Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting close on Monday next with tho secretary, Mr. W. Hall. Tho Otaki Maori Racing Club's spring meeting commences to-day, and will bo concluded on Mondnj - . Tho hurdlo horse Canterbury, in T. Cotton's stables at Riccarton, has been removed to New Brighton, whore it is intended to give him swimming exercise. This is in order to see if it will keep him sound. Happy Maid (Soult—Morry Maid) recently slipped twins to Bezonian, on her owner's station at Koputarua. She is now to visit Achilles. An Australian horsemai, C. Cusdin, brother to the crack rider of the same name, has como to reside in Now Zealand, and has obtained an engagement to ride Mr. •I C. N. Grigg's horsos. Cusdin. is reported. to be equally at home on tho flat and over fences. ' Three brood mares, Prologue (dam of Prelude), Marstone, and Merrie Zearand's dam, arrived at Waikanae from Picton yesterday on a visit to tho imported horse Bezonian, Safety Pin, who won the Maiden at Ashburton cn tho second day of tho meeting, is by Terrapin from Dudu, and was bred by tho Cholceboro trainer, E. Cutts. He is a three-year-old, and is stated to be capable of considerable improvement. He was sold some time back to the Timaru trainer, S, Trilford, and he won at the first time of asking. Rumour credited him with defeating Stepmeter over four furlongs in a gallop before tho meeting. Gowrio Lass, tho Gold Reef—Lass o'. Gowrio filly, in A. M. Wright's stables, will make her first public appearance in tho Maiden Plate at Otaki to-day. Another Maiden entrant from the same stable it Asternoun. R. Longley, who used to train Master Paul and Laglestone for the gentleman who races as "Mr. H. Nurse," has again got these two_horses undor his care, and succeeded in- winning a race with each of them at Ashburton last week. St. Bees, who showed winning form at Marton, is engaged in two races at Otaki to-day. The St. Ambrose gelding was recently credited with running a mile on the Levin tracks in lmin. Usee. The Maiden Flate at Otaki to-day con- ! tains tho names ■of some speedy • horses, amongst them being Our Queen, the halfsister to_ Maori King. This filly showed extraordinary pace last season, and tho distance, five furlongs, should suit' her. Tho double, The Cornet and Riirik, has been freely- supported in the south for the New Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap. E. Lowe has been engaged to ride Lady Volley in tho opening event at Otaki today. Her owner, Mr. J. Cress, was unable to make the trip, and tho mare went up in charge, of A. Goodman. A final reminder is given to those who intend racing their horSes at Blenheim that nominations for the Spring meeting close this ovening with the secretary, Mr. L. Griffiths. A change in riders is to be tried on Full itato at Otaki to-day, and instead of his usual pilot (S. Reid) being in the saddle, T. Pritchard will have the mount. C. Emerson will ride Countermine in the Presidents' Handioap at Otaki to-day. The racehorses Hirini, Septimus, Iranui, Ebonite, Lady Volley, Foreshot, Deploy, First Battery, Abercoed, Ahua-' pai, Mount Victoria, Rongomau, Terawhiti. Merry Frank, Big ■ Blast, Emma, and.jlndra wore railed to Otaki by tho morning train yesterday. . At the Eldorslie stud, Mr. Lan Duncan'B brood mare Angele (Multiform—llappy Valloy) has' foaled a bay tilly to Downshire. A private letter, received about a week ,ago from the owner of Teviotdalo (Achilles I— Strathspey), stated 'that the youngster had contracted influenza sinco arrival in Sydney, and, in consequence, will not sport silk at any race meeting on the other side. In the absence of any other news, it may be assumed that the scratching of Canute for tho breeders' Plato is due to the. Charlemagne II colt having contracted the -same ailment as Teviotdalo and Peirene. Foalings to date at Waikanae include Aideen (Birkenhead—Mount Ida), a brown tilly to Charlemagne II; Pierrette, a hay filly to Varco; Kpungold (Gold Reef— liaworewere), a brown, filly to Charlemagne II; Lady Helen (dam of Meriwa), a bay colt to Achilles; Nerve (Birkenhead —Spot), a chestnut colt to Varco; Success (Tho_ Officer—Content), a bay filly to Martian; Two Step (Stepuiak—Faraway), a bay filly to Martian. Comedy King is reported to 'be going splendidly at Flemington, as is Trafalgar, and it would appear as if both will be ready to givo a good account of themselves against the representatives of this State (says a Sydney writer). Prince Fcote's form in the Chelmsford Stakes was very disappointing. He could not pace it with anything in tho early part of the race, and thero was no particular dash in. his finishing run. Consequent on that form some followers of the game do not regard him as likely to give the Victorian division any trouble in the Spring Stakes, but a fortnight hence he is likely to be much better than at Tattersall's meeting. It was his first raco for nearly a year, and it may be that his trainer was a trifle easy with the son of Sir.Foote after ho had shown a couple of good gallops about three weeks ago. In mentioning that Comedy Ring, Dhobi, and Prizefighter will be seen on tho Randwick trades during tho coming week, a Melbourne writer says: "Tho last-nam-ed pair are being taken over moro for tho purpose of assisting tho black champion in his work than with, any erpectation of gaining winning honours. When Lynch visited Randwick last Spring Comedy King was at a disadvantage through having nothing to work with him. Tho resident trainers did not care about taking him on, 60 that Lynch has provided against a recurrcnco of his previous experience."
