It .was Tfh-olvod to co-opcrate with the Hastings lire Board in endeavouring to procure the passing of legislation giving Ine boards tho same facilities for loans as other local bodies. ° The Underwriters' Association wrote, asking the board to furnish copies of tho 111 mutes of board meetings. Tlie request was refused. The engineer of tlie Petono Borough Council advised that lie.was going to make of the pressure along tlie mains, with a view to discovering where tlio loss was occurring. In the meantime the pressuro would be augmented oy pumping when required. fh« superintendent reported that wlion serious fires occurred last month, owing to the fire plug being 1500 feet away, it liad been necessary to send back to the station for more hose, which caused considerable delay. The hose plant had not been brought out at first, owing to the alarm having been given, at the station, which led him to believe that the firo was close at hand. Mr. Piper considered that an error in judgment had been made. When the alarm was given the superintendent did not know where tho firo was, aud he should have taken all the plant at his disposal. Tho fact that the, alarm had boon given from il.ree different boxes should have shown him that the outbreak was serious. ' ~ The chairman said the occurrence. was unfortunate, but hu did not think too much blamo should bo put upon the superintendent. Mr. Kempthorno and Mr. Short agreed that tho availablo plant should have bcin taken out. Tho superintendent stated that when ho left the station there was only one man, a_ messenger, with him. They had 700 ft. of hose, a ladder, two hydrants, and a handcart—sufficient gear to enable two leads of hose to be brought to play upon the fire. Mr. Piper remarked that tho ; ncident showed tho necessity for a proper fire station, where a station staff would always b» available to work the whqlo plant. The committee appointed to consider the selection, of a site for a new fire station submitted offers of five different sections in Buick Street. On the motion of Mr. Short it was deckled to purchase a soction at the corner of Elizabeth' Street and lluick Street, having a frontage of lOSft. to tho former street, aud 88ft. to the latter, at a cost of .C'lUI. A special committee was set up to submit designs for a new station at a special meeting of the board to bo held next month. The secretary was instructed to tako steps to procure the section decided upon, and also to take steps to dispose of the site of the present station.
