LAND SURVEYS.
BEPOKT.FOB THE YEAB. The annual report on surveys, issued by the Department of Lands, was presented to Parliament yesterday. It states that 121 surveyors were employed during the year ended March 31, 1911. of whom 9."i were employed in the North Island and 29 in the South. In addition a number of cadets and assistants were employed. The total cost of surveyors and their parties amounted to .£82,787. Totals of completed work returned exceed those of the Srevious year except in the case of aori Land Board and gold-mining surveys, and tho cost of surveys, per acre, is considerably less than it was last year. Tho area returned this j-ear is 131.731 acres made up of '130,031" acres by staff and d7OO acres by contract surveyors. Work returned for the North Island amounted to 252,550 acres. Auckland contributed 85.400 acres, Taranaki 30.1 At; acres, and Wellington 136,000 acres. The South Island returned 182,131 acres, of which Nelson contributed 170,620 acres Westknd 10,000 acres, and Southland 15G1 acres. Under the respective headings of "Eural" and "Village and Suburban" surveys of 331,715 acres and 1811 acres were completed during the year. An area of 172,181 acres of Native land was surveyed during the year, comprising 110,581 acres of Native land and 31,877 acres of Maori Land Board surveys. With the exception of 5C6 acres, these surveys aro
distributed in the North Island districts of Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and Wellington. Surveys contemplated and actually in progress total 629,870 acres.
