CONFLICTING CABLES. IS PROHIBITION REPEALED? A Press Association cablegram, dated Now York, September 13, published Ln Tub Dominion', stated that tho State of Maine refused by a narrow majority to repeal the- Prohibition law. Yesterday the following private telegram whs received from Auckland:— "Cablegrams wore received in Auckland yesterday from London and New York, stating that the official result of the referendum held this month in tho State of Maine lias resulted in tho repeal of Prohibition. In 1858 Maine'adopted the present, system of Prohibition, and tliis is tho first opportunity given to the people of the State to register their voto at a special election when no party contest for the control of the Government or tho claims of rival candidates could detract from tho consideration of this question." WHAT DOES IT MEAN? (By Telceraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, September 21. The following cable was received by tho Auckland Provincial Council and Trade Organisation to-day:— "Maine: Official result is in favour of the repeal of Prohibition by 26 votes." , The No-Licenso organisation states that this refers to the question of tho removal of Prohibition from tho constitution, and fhat the questjon of granting liceiißcs has yet to bo decided by tbe people. The Maine Prohibition law was enacted in ISSI, repealed in 1856, re-enacted in 1858. In 1834 it became a part of the constitution of tho State.
