His Excellency the Governor and Lady Islington are to entertain the boys of tho Govorniuent training ship Amokura in the grounds of Government House this afternoon. Sports will be held, and tea served on tho lawn (if tho weather permits). On Monday next (Dominion Dav) his Excellency will review tho cadets on naradc at Newtown Park at 3.15 p.m., and"tho samo evening their Excellencies will attend tho patriotic concert to bo held in the Town Jlall. On Thursday next his Excellency Ls to leave for Napier, where ho is to lay tho foundation-stone oi a new Girls' School the following day. It is possiblo that ho will stay in Napier over tho weekend.
The Hon. W. W. M'Ca-rdle, M.L.C., has been grantetl three days' leave of absence from tlis legislative duties on account of illness in bis family.
Mr. A. AV. Hogg was yesterday granted a week s leave of absence irom his nlaco in Parliament on accouut of serious illness.
Mr. Justice Edwards arrived from Wanganui last night, and will preside at the resumed civil sittings of the Supremo Court this morning.
The IJokitika School Committee last evening appointed Mr. L. dc Berry to tho )K>sition of headmaster of the Hokitika District High School. Mr. do Bcrrv, who is to take up his duties in tho early part of next month, is at present headmaster of tho C'obdon School, Grey district.—Press Association.
Sir. Chow S. Lanchu, the new Chinese Consul for New Zealand, arrived from Peking, via Australia, by tho Uliniaroa yesterday, and will take up his duties next week. Mr. Lanchu, who is accompanied by his wife and two daughters, was not very well last evening. The new Consul brought with him' six servantsthree Chinese maids and throe menservants. Mr. T. 11. Shah, who has been Acting-Consul since Mr. Hwang's elevation to tho Consul-Generalship at Melbourne, will remain here as eecretarytranslator, and Mr. Ilwang also remains as secretary to the Consulate.
Mr. H. W. Stevenson, tho well-known English billiard-player, who lias been engaged in a series of matches in Australia, arrived from Sydney by the Uliniaroa last evening, en route to America. Mr. Stevenson, who is accompanied by his wife, is to. give an exhibition of his skill as a cueist at the Wellington Club I his evening. He leaves Auckland for Vancouver, by tho /jcalanilia to-morrow week. Among the passengers from Sydney by the Ulimnroa yesterday was Mr. T. 11. Lowry, of Hawkc's Bay, and Mr. Wm. Simm, manager for lily tho and Co., of Napier. Mr. Allan Muir, one of tho proprietors of the "Poverty Bay Herald, and Mr. Cbderwall, manager of the Gishorne freezing works, are visiting Wellington,
